EQUINE ORGANISATIONS: more riding clubs for adults
-
Hello, how do you go about starting a riding club for adults, do you have to go through the B.H.S. I do not have transport at the moment , and there was talk of a B.H.S. club starting on the Isle of Sheppey, but nothing came of it , the nearest to us is Faversham and District, We dont have many bridleways either, one that I know of and that is a short bit off of Mill Hill, More Farmers should let us ride the perimeter of their fields.

I agree with the idea of more farmers allowing us to ride the perimeter of their land, but unfortuantly there are some riders that do not stick to the outside and ruin the crops and the farmers living, this means spoiling it for the rest of us. Where abouts are you from? I should ask the BHS about staring a riding club and they will point you in the right direction. Good luck

It is such a shame that what Stefanie says is true, a lot of farmers dont like horses using their land as some riders abuse the right of access, not only startling livestock and ruining crops, but also ruining the fields themselevs by using them in wet and muddy conditions, making them a nightmare to maintain and/or repair.
Realistically, if there are a shortage of bridleway routes near to you, it would be best to try and form some kind of bridleway group to campaign for more routes and access. The BHS are always willing to help people set up such groups and offer advice on how to get old rights of way re-opened.
I have recently moved my gee's to a new stables and one of the main deciding factors was that there were loads of bridleways nearby! I can't wait for a bit of sunshine so tha twe can get out exploring them now!!
Good luck with starting a riding club too...BHS would be best to ask for advice. You might like to try the following site for some hints and tips!

I think the BHS does a great job on bridleways - but would be good if government could encourage farmers to be more horse friendly, specially when farmers are getting so much subsidy. Lots of routes that existed in the past were gradually absorbed by farms, and it is practically impossible to get them back on the maps - have to do the whole legal thing which costs, and its difficult to succeed. And we need to get horses off the roads - not safe. We've had one good development in Yorkshire - the northbound carriageway of a short section of the old A1 has been grassed over and is now a non-car way. A riding club would be a good way of sharing local info - hope you started one horsesrme!
