My pony is 21 this year and is still as full of energy as ever! She is perfectly healthy and still manages to tank off with me on a hack and when we are going XC!

It doesn't really matter how old your horse is, as long as it's healthy they should be fine!

mines 14/15 i think. he isnt classed as old just yet. like hollie has said as long as your horse is fit n healthy it'll be fine. it doesnt matter how old your horse is as long as its healthy/ my pony is 13 n my shetland is 14 too but they're youngish (not young, young if you know what i mean lol).

I find it's difficult to remembr how old your horse is, you start off with a six year old, then after a few years suddenly realise he is 12 - and 12 seems to be a sort of cut off point - lots of ads are for "12 year olds" - beacuse people don't think they should buy older than that.

my pony n shetland is 14. my horse rio is approx 16years old n he's ace. i don't understand why people think when they get around to this age to in thier late 20s that they're not suitable to ride anymore! it doesnt matter about age. all that matters is condition n fitness. rio's an extremely good lad who loves to have a prance about n theres no need for me to retire him anytime soon!

does he really?? I mean does he not look just a little bit stiff sometimes? Do you give him any of those joint supplements? But I guess horses are like humans - some really can look pretty good in old age, and others have to hobble round with sticks.

My pony is 22 I think this year, and still hunts every week, sometimes twice, jumps everything and acts like a 4 yr old most of the time!Has the biggest buck of any pony I know! My mare is 21 I think this year, or she could be 22 I'm not quite sure! She is semi-retired as she has quite bad arthritis, and has had a lot of leg injuries due to hunting that flare up every now and again (we got told to put her down 7 years ago by one stupid vet, but when we saw her careering round the field with the yearling and polo ponies, and trotting up sound, we ignored him. And thank god we did, coz end of 2004, beginning of 2005, we got her re-MOT'd by a different vet, and was told she'd be fine to work again, and had a brilliant summer, jumping, going to the Pony Club Dressage Nationals, all sorts.) She still enjoys going for long hacks, and can still be a handful in the school when she decides she doesn't want to do a circle! My other big lad is around 14, and although he'll never hunt again (he had to have stem cell treatment for a massive hole in his tendon) he's being reschooled and is coming along fantastically in his dressage, and goes on lovely long hacks with my dad. I think Vanessa's right though, horses are just like people in that some show their age, and some age better than others. It all depends on what sort of life they've had. If you hunt them hard, you expect injuries, which then show up more when they get older. If you just plod around with them all their lives they'll go forever! What does anybody else think? Also how unlucky am I with mine?!?! Still love em to pieces though!

My Welsh Cob, called Reyno, was six months away from being 40 when I sadly had to have him put to sleep! He competed at show jumping until he was 34 (and he was still winning competitions when I retired him). I continued to hack him out regularly along with his fieldmate (Tufty, who is now 26). Reyno went into full retirement at 38 when his eye sight started to fade, but he still enjoyed a wander up the lane right up until the day he died. I always said he'd tell me when he'd had enough and I think that when he came over to me and put his head in my lap, while I was waiting for the vet to come to see him due to an abscess, it was his way of saying "mum, I've had enough, its time for me to go". I felt like I'd lost my best friend as I'd had him since he was 12 and we grew up together, I think I'll always miss him.
