true - not all cobs are chunky...my last hunter/jumper was classed as a cob...but he was light-wieght and very nimble. He was a stunning horse...I dont think you can say that ia cob is necessarily heavy or ugly etc just because of the breed - they come in all shapes and sizes and some are more beautiful than others....
however, they do tend to be more laid back and generally easier to do than alot of lightwieght/thoroughbred or arab etc breeds - less fussy and more hairy, lol...
    Id reccommend cobs for beginners

yeh cobs can be for beginners but some can be naughty than others like in every type of pony/horse you can get good/bad or easy/hard x.x

I love cobs and am pleased to say that I own two!

Dolly is a dales x welsh cob, and Luna, her daugher is three quarters welsh cob.

Some cobs can be 'ploddy', but I have ridden many thoroughbred, lighter types that were more so. At the end of the day, horses like people, have differnt temperments nad personalities and therefore some will be fast and flighty and others will be laid back and easy going.

Welsh cobs are oftne known for being 'hotter' than other cobs, and this is thought to be due to the warmer blood in their ancestry, as Arab blood has a big influence.

I actually prefer a 'chunkier' looking horse, to what I consider to the more 'whippet' like tb's and arabs! For example, a true Freisan, with long flowing mane is beautiful and my ideal horse!

each to their own i suppose, otherwise the world would be a boring place indeed!

I love cobs to ride coz they are very easy.. and look gorgeous traditional.. but would NEVER have one.. they're just not the sort I'd have ! Not like excitable enough,, normally dead laid back !

i dont mind cobs as long you dont have to constantly kick/squezze them

I dont find Ollie hard work at all, if anything i find him too forward going, he keeps up easy peesy with my mums horse whos a tb x connemera round xc or just a canter. I think they are a stunning breed of horse and just perfect for anyone...x:bigsmile:

sometimes people say a horse is 'a bit cobby' - as if it's not a good thing - think they mean a bit heavy on the forehand, and perhaps a short stride at front - but don't think this is fair, cos i definitely know one cob that is very light on his feet and does great dressage. :surprised:

I dont agree with Hanar2007 saying their easy to ride. Not all cobs have the same temperment some of them are alot more forward and hot headed than others. I know alot of cobs and over half off them are really excitable and laidback isnt in their dictionary.
Cobs are underestimated in what they can do, and people that won cobs know what they can do ad how brilliant they are. Ive been riding for a long time now and Oliver will never be too easy or laidback for me to ride, i wouldnt ride another horse for the world. xx
    sorry for the essay

I Like Cobs But Prefer Lightweight /Hotbloods Arabs/Tb Id Rater Have No Hairy Legs I Like
Them Very Good For First Horses People Say There Plods But I Think There All Not It Depends Breed Age Type Temperment There Very Nice For Showing And I Hate When There Featehrs Are Shaved
And Manes Hogged I Like Natraul Look.My Arab Has A Long Mane Id Never Pull It I Prefer Natarul

I love cobs. especially coloured ones as i think they are so distinctive and often have a very kind nature...

I think it depends what discipline you do though, i used to have two ponies that i show jumped and the cob was super careful but if im honest way harder work, particularly competing indoors and through doubles. I suppose its just easier to turn a narrower pony and they seldom tend to get on the 'forehand...'

i much prefer ollie to be shaved, i shaved his feathers off because they are far to hard to control but when i started showing because i had shaved feathers i had to shave his mane and tail to, i was a little upset to shave his gorgeous mane off but i think personally some cobs do suit it and i think he looks stunning, and its one less grooming job for me lol!!!

i've just bought a gypsy cob foal, hes fantastic, i can't wait till he gets all his hair, and has the sweetest temperament so much so hes being kept entire to see if he has stallion potential when hes a grown up boy. but one of the horses i work with is a gypsy cob mare aswell, is very forward going and is definetly a novice ride as she has a definate "get off me" attitude.
