It seems that there are two ways of judging hunter trials and cross country events:

time sections - do these encourage reckless riding? but how can you get around this - its fun

optimum time - is this a little dull

I loved the time section when i had a super fast pony but when i got a steadier horse i felt disadvantaged and the optimum time thing bored me somewhat, but its hard to think of a happy medium. x x

How bout doing some arena work over SMALL showjumps so that horse just includes the jump in the canter stride, keeps same steady rhythym - just for a start!
I HATE falling off, no good, u musn't be doing with that.

with regards to the x country comp scoring, if there is a fence on the course wide enough then in the pairs incorp a fence they have to do together, for an individual round if there is a gate to be opened and closed this will normally slow them down!!

:@ I hate optimum time.. It aint my fault my horse is uncontrolably speedy haha.. I have trot round to make sure i dont beat the optimum time lmaoo.. a timed score is more fun wooo!

The optimum time is there to tell you the safest speed to take the fences. Its not safe to jump 3' at 500mpm.

If you cant control your horse, you have a problem.
